Construction of the No. 6 Tailings Management Area (TMA) at the Porcupine Gold Mines commenced in 1983. Since that time, the perimeter dams have been raised in a number of stages using a variety of different methods. Dam heights currently range from approximately 2 m to 30 m around the approximately 10 km perimeter of the No. 6 TMA.
The dams have primarily been built using rock fill shells, filter materials and a low permeability containment material, consisting of clay and/or a 60 mil textured High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane, sandwiched in protective geotextiles.
Since 2012, BGC has been retained to conduct a number of studies related to the No. 6 TMA, including providing design and construction monitoring services. Tasks related to this work have included:
• Preparation of design drawings and technical specifications
• Tender bid assessment
• Providing Construction Quality Assurance
• Taking instrument readings and interpretation during construction
• Construction Records Reporting.
