The Role

This position will involve a wide variety of GIS-related tasks, from spatial data analyses to production mapping. While the majority of work will initially involve generating maps for reports, the successful candidate will soon have the opportunity to explore automation techniques like python programming, SQL Server database work, and a variety of open-source GIS technologies. The GIS Team at BGC is a very fluid group tasked with a large variety of work. As a consultant with many clients, the problems that BGC is addressing are ever-changing. Long-term success will be realized by establishing and growing a niche that suits the applicant’s skills and interest as time goes on while continuing to be adaptable and receptive to change.


The GIS team provides expertise in the management and use of all spatial data available to BGC and our clients. This can include any of the following tasks:.

  • Filing and processing of large quantities of spatial data while adhering to BGC standards as well as established industry techniques.
  • Publishing and administering ArcGIS Server web services to enable access to spatial data through a web browser to be used internally and by BGC’s clients.
  • Helping with Borehole logging tasks with proprietary gINT or Holebase SI solutions.
  • Conducting multivariate spatial analyses using a variety of ESRI and open-source software, and in some cases automating such processes.
  • Producing maps for client reports.
  • Training others throughout BGC in the fundamentals of GIS.
  • Working with BGC’s software development team to ensure that the GIS aspects of the custom web software being built are sound.
  • Creating web maps and field apps through ArcGIS Online and ESRI’s Collector for ArcGIS, or fully customized applications using the ArcGIS Server JavaScript API.


  • A bachelor’s degree
  • A firm understanding of cartographic principles.
  • Specialized education in GIS such as an Advanced Diploma or a master’s degree.
  • At least five years of relevant experience.
  • A firm understanding of how to process, make use of, and share LiDAR data.
  • Propensity to take ownership of tasks but also to work well in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • A passion for GIS fundamentals and knack for answering spatial questions in creative ways
  • Extensive experience with the Python programming language
  • Experience with the ArcGIS Server JavaScript API
