The Role
BGC is looking for a Junior to Intermediate 3D Modeller to focus on the use of the 3D modelling software tools. We use these tools to clean, prepare, and produce outputs from 3D models that can be incorporated into our other CAD/GIS software tools.
The applied earth science projects we take on often require the use of 3D models, which may include: geology, earth works structures, excavations, and equipment. The formats of this data are varied and the tools available to manipulate it can be complex. In most cases, this 3D data needs to be modified to create 2D cross sections and maps ready for use in our other CAD/GIS production software (AutoCAD Civil 3D and ArcGIS).
In this role, you will work in close coordination with engineers, geoscientists, and other geomatics team members. You will become a key resource for the use of data/files from a wide range of 3D modelling software used in mining, geology, and civil engineering.
The ideal candidate will be interested in becoming an expert in 3D data, 3D models, and 3D modelling tools.
Responsibilities
Develop expertise in the following software and tools:
- Surpac
- GEM4D
- LeapFrog
- HoleBase SI
- CloudCompare
Develop a working knowledge of:
- Receive, organize, clean and prepare 3D model files from clients that may come in a variety of formats into a standard format ready for use within our projects.
- Manipulate, cut, section, repair and merge 3D solids into new products for use by other Geomatics team members or engineers/geoscientists.
- Prepare preliminary cross sections with geology and drill hole data using tools already available in Surpac, Leapfrog, and HoleBaseSI.
- Prepare templates for preliminary maps and cross sections in Surpac, Leapfrog, and HoleBaseSI.
- Learn the basic cartographic requirements of geology cross sections and maps.
- Create 3D surfaces or solids from point data, polyline data, or sketches provided by engineers or geoscientists.
- Run existing Python tools for data sorting in 3D and for supporting the construction of groundwater models.
- Be responsible for providing data products that are components of larger drawing products.
Other responsibilities:
- Support many projects in parallel; with requests that could range from simple file format conversion to the intersection of 10’s of complex geology solids to create linework for drawings/maps.
- Be responsible for communicating your capacity, progress, and priorities on a daily basis to your team members and projects you are supporting.
Required Education, Experience & Competencies
- Diploma or certificate from a relevant field (geomatics, GIS, geology, mining and mineral resource engineering, civil engineering)
- Diploma or undergraduate degree related to geology or earth science is an asset
- Aptitude with computers
- Previous experience with 3D modelling software
- Experience with data and software related to 3D models, maps, and cross sections
- Interest in learning new software applications
- Experience with python coding is an asset.
