Planning & Alternatives Analysis
We rely on our expertise with earth observation and remote sensing technologies, and our management of big data experience, to understand the natural environment for project planning. Our use of augmented reality and other innovative technologies facilitate communication and understanding with stakeholders.
BGC uses standardized and custom approaches to evaluating alternatives with respect to multiple performance objectives, and how the alternatives are expected to perform in the future, considering land use and climate changes.
Site characterization begins with remote review of data sources, and often evolves to field campaigns and laboratory testing. We are experts in geologic mapping, drilling and borehole logging, cone penetrometer and other in situ testing, as well as downhole and surface geophysics. We generally use our own equipment and personnel for the testing and geophysics. BGC’s soil and rock mechanics laboratory is one of the best in the world and samples are tested there or at regional labs.
Analysis & Design
BGC delivers geotechnical design for transportation infrastructure, including all aspects of slope, wall and foundation design. Our multi-disciplinary approach to design means that we consider all geologic, hydrotechnical and geotechnical features of a site. We combine this with our strong understanding of transportation practices to provide geotechnical designs suited to the scale of the work, site conditions and construction limitations.
BGC conducts analysis and design at the scope needed for a range of projects. For example, in two dimensions or three dimensions, and using limit equilibrium and factor of safety, or deformation and reliability analyses. We are skilled in most common analysis software for soil rock, groundwater, and soil/structure analyses.
BGC provides quality assurance (QA) during construction of transportation projects to safeguard the owner’s investment. We are experts at designing and implementing practical QA plans that give project owners confidence that designs are built to specifications. Our services include review of quality control (QC) documents, field reviews during construction, review and recommendations related to field fit designs, and monitoring and resolution of technical issues. BGC can also undertake the contract administration role, if required.
Operation & Monitoring
BGC has the expertise to assess geotechnical, weather and hydrotechnical monitoring requirements and to recommend, install and maintain appropriate monitoring instrumentation. Our data management services include database and website development, live data connectivity and communication systems to provide warning of tolerance threshold exceedance.
BGC services clients in the operation of their infrastructure primarily by providing on-call emergency response to geohazards or events that occur that impact service. We are skilled at providing services remotely using data management tools and available data, and we have contracts where we mobilize to site immediately, and until the situation is stable.
BGC also maintains monitoring or remotely sensed data such as lidar, radar and InSAR, and contact sensors, such as Shape Accel-Arrays, slope inclinometers and piezometers. We have a range of system complexity and automation, depending on the project needs.
Geohazard Risk Management
BGC leads the industry in terrain hazard, risk assessment and mitigation design, and manages our clients’ geohazard risks on projects worldwide. We combine our specialized knowledge of landslides, hydrologic and hydrogeologic processes, seismic and other geohazards with risk management principles to highlight potential problem areas from the earliest stages of project development through to operations and development of emergency response plans.
Transportation Asset Management & Risk Communication
BGC is an innovator and a leader in developing web-based transportation geotechnical asset management systems that effectively communicate risk. To achieve optimum cost-effective long-term asset management, we help clients inventory their assets and associated geotechnical and hydrotechnical conditions, assess vulnerabilities and changes in performance, and make risk-based decisions on how and where to best allocate resources. We use web-based maps and database systems to provide powerful scalability with variable resolution and data overlays to deliver detailed site-specific information on thousands of assets distributed on a regional scale. These systems are also used as a common portal for related asset management resources such as real-time condition information (e.g., instrumentation, weather, stream flow) and geohazard trigger response protocols.
